A weekend on the dirt

It was the first real summer weekend of the year here in Colorado so what better way to spend it than in the mountains. I headed up to Winter Park on saturday to race the Super Loop...at the last minute I thought better of racing as I had yet to ride my mountain bike this season. While the peeps were racing, I enjoyed a great climb up to the top of Mary Jane and the reward of some sweet single track back to the base. As the racing was still going on when I got back down, I decided to head back up to the top and enjoy another fun descent. It has been years since I spent a day at a Winter Park mountain bike race and nothing much had changed, it was just like the good 'ole days....lots o' fun.

Sunday BFF and I headed to Breckenridge to ride again in the dirt. This time it was to scout out next weekends race course...the Firecracker50. An epic mountain bike race - 50 miles with tons o climbing on some super challenging terrain. For the second year in a row it will decide the mountain bike marathon national champ. We rode a lap of the course, climbed a gobs ton, descended some fun trails, were lucky with gorgeous weather and made only one wrong turn....that is I only made one wrong turn -- good thing BFF and Jack-attack coordinated efforts to track me down! The weather held out for us and we had a simply fun day playing in the dirt.

Tour of the Gila

VAC Team GC podium - L to R: Nicole Evans, Sharon Allpress, Leah Goldstein, Kristin Sanders, Robin Farina, Chrissy Ruiter, Lisa Hunt (seated).

Gila week flew by, before I could take a breath bff cabana boy and I were on our way back to Tucson to catch our flight to DTown. We were blessed with super great weather, which means not too windy. This year was a different sort of Gila for me, digging deep to try to find some racing legs after surgery 5 weeks ago. Our team did great, snagging team GC and placing three riders in the top 10. Nicole was the break-away monster of the week getting into two critical and long breaks -- its good to have her back racing injury free.

Lance Bobblehead in the VAC team van.

There can't be a post about Gila 2009 without a mention of the Lance Armstrong show. Yea, Lance was there racing. He had a big bus with him, a few barriers and a few extra police and a couple more fans in attendance. But really even with the Lance show, it was business as usual. Not much was different. The racing was just as hard, racers were just as focused and fans got just as thrilling racing this year as they had in the past. And to think all this was in jeopardy in February with a shortfall in sponsorship, thanks to SRAM for stepping up as title sponsor for Gila - word is they are penned for a 3 year sponsorship. Good to know Gila will continue.

Next up Joe Martin Stage Race this week in Fayetteville, AR. Never been to Arkansas, excited!

Rebooting....

While rebooting from my collarbone version 2.0 upgrade, I've had some time on my hands to get stuff done...

I paid my $.17 AT&T bill with 17 checks each made out for $.01...

I took care of some parking tickets....

I taught the Girls Scouts you hear with your ear and you find your ear here...oh, also that cigars are bad for you...

And finally, I notified KitKat she won the weekly Chipotle burrito drawing and when Chipotle denied it, KitKat went all east coast lawyer on them and ended up with a truckload of burritos. yummm..

Phew! that was a lot of work.

Team Baby in Training

VAC team baby missed training camp in '09 (here she is at camp in '08).

This year instead of camp she headed to the southern hemisphere for some serious warm weather cycle training in Buenes Aires.

Watch out...she has shown some mad skills, already she can keep it upright in the sand.
